TWICE COLONIZED
Denmark, Canada, Greenland | 2023 | 92 min
The first draft of the memoirs written by Inuit lawyer Aaju Peter begins with the question, “Is it possible to change the world and also heal one’s wounds?” A vivid, revelatory portrait of a well-known advocate of natives’ rights, famous for her tenacity and her fiery speeches in defence of Inuit lifestyle given in small classes or international conferences, who is also in search of a personal resolution and a way to heal the burning trauma of colonization. When her son died, Aaju set out for a personal journey to bring to justice her colonizers in Canada and Denmark. Twice Colonized manages to capture the fragility and strength of the lawyer’s complex personality by creating a nuanced portrait of an indigenous militant in the contemporary world. Getting rid of the demons of colonization means to involve all of one’s spheres, bringing the personal and the political together, but also clash in unexpected ways. (l.f.)
