TERRA INCOGNITA

Italy, France | 2024 | 93  min | col.

Two utopian experiences take place in parallel: in the Italian Alps, a family of German origins lives without power or contacts with society; across the alpine frontier, in France, a huge plant is being built to produce power by way of cold fusion. Enrico Masi has accomplished his most ambitious project, the outcome of years of researching the Anthropocene: departing from the figure of naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt – embodied by the voice of a ‘cosmic narrator’ – the film opens to a dialogue between opposite development models that reflects on the human condition and the relationship with material resources. Atomic energy and its symbolic load clash with an opposite tension, the rejection of industrialization and degrowth, imagining a possible future that includes the quest for a new, magmatic and elusive, extremely refined cinematic form that is at once lyrical and concrete (a.s.)
