STAND OUT OF MY SUNLIGHT
ÔTE-TOI DE MON SOLEIL
Belgium | 2023 | 50 min
Joseph is an elderly man who must leave his home. He has travelled across the city with his cart for years, piling up the most diverse reams of paper, collecting objects of all kinds, and transforming his apartment in a labyrinthine chaos. The camera explores it up close, fishing casually from the pile, in a succession of details, out-of-focus shots, and analogue digressions. To enter into this kaleidoscopic space that is his dwelling also means to access the most intimate folds of the mind and soul of a peculiar person, outlining a portrait that extends throughout the last century, in which personal history overflows into the greater history of a waning twentieth century. What is left of our lives if not the remains that we leave behind? And if the point was precisely not to leave anything behind? That life is nothing other than what we have gone through with difficulty and joy? (t.p.)
